AI Citation and Entity Program

Last updated October 14, 2026. Written by the Third Coast AI team.

The AI citation and entity program is the off-site half of getting named by AI engines: Third Coast AI builds the third-party record that lets ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot recognize your company as a real, consistent entity and corroborate what your own site says about you. The work covers earned mentions on the sites the engines cite for your category, directory and review profiles, Wikidata and (where you qualify) Wikipedia, a schema sameAs chain that ties the profiles together, and a quarterly check of what the engines now believe about you. It runs as a monthly retainer, with the fee quoted after a short scoping call.

This program exists because the strongest single predictor of being cited by an AI engine is not your own site. Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands found that unlinked mentions on other websites correlated with AI citations at 0.664, three times the 0.218 for backlinks, and the 5W AI Platform Citation Source Index put earned media at roughly 85% of 680 million AI citations analyzed. The engines are deciding who you are by reading what everyone else says.

Why is an entity different from a brand?

Entity, in the engine's sense

A thing the model can identify with confidence across sources: a company with one consistent name, location, founder, set of services and set of identifiers (website, LinkedIn, Wikidata ID, Google Business Profile, review profiles) that all agree with one another. A brand is what you say about yourself. An entity is what the record says about you, and the engines weight the record.

Ahrefs' 75,000-brand study is the cleanest evidence that this record pays: brand web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664 against 0.218 for backlinks, and brands in the top quarter for mentions earned more than ten times the AI Overview citations of the next quarter, which is consistent with what we see. Cyrus Shepard's May 2026 synthesis of 54 studies scores brand and entity trust at 6.8 out of 10 and entity consistency at 5.8, below structure and accessibility but well above domain authority at 5.0. Put simply, a tidy entity will not rescue a bad page, but a good page attached to a fuzzy entity often does not get selected at all.

Which sources do the engines read for your category?

It depends on the engine and on the category, and the audit tells us which. Across the field, Reddit accounts for somewhere between 21% and 40% of AI Overview citations, Wikipedia is ChatGPT's single largest source at about 7.8% of citations, YouTube mentions now show the strongest correlation with AI citation in Ahrefs' 2026 update at 0.737, and LinkedIn appears heavily for B2B topics. Only about 11% of cited domains overlap between ChatGPT and Perplexity, so a program that works on one engine's sources and ignores the others will show lopsided results.

For a regional business the list is more local and more specific: the chamber, the business journal, the trade association, the review sites buyers in that category use, the local news site, and the handful of directories that happen to be cited for "best [category] in [town]" prompts. We pull that list from the audit's citation reads rather than from a generic checklist.

Can you describe the work month by month?

  1. Entity baseline. We record how each engine currently describes you (the fact-check prompts), reconcile every profile you already have, and fix the inconsistencies: old addresses, three spellings of the company name, a founder listed differently on two sites.
  2. Identifiers and schema. Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, Bing Places, Wikidata item where appropriate, Crunchbase or industry equivalents, and an Organization schema on your site whose sameAs array points at every one of them so the chain closes.
  3. Corroboration pages. We identify which of your decision-factor claims have no third-party echo, and we prioritize earning mentions that corroborate those claims specifically, because a claim that only you make is a claim the engine discounts.
  4. Earned mentions. Pitches to the publications, associations, podcasts and community threads the engines cite for your category, with a quality bar: a real story, a real quote from you, no paid placements disguised as coverage.
  5. Review and Q&A presence. Honest work on the review profiles and discussion platforms that appear in your citation reads, including answering real questions in your own name where that is welcome.
  6. Quarterly re-read. We re-run the fact-check and visibility prompts, log what the engines now say about you, and adjust the target list.

The engines don't take your word for it. If you say you're the only accredited lab in the state and nobody else on the internet says it too, the model treats it as marketing. Our job is to make sure the record agrees with you.

Is Wikipedia realistic for a mid-sized company?

Usually not, and we will say so early. Wikipedia's notability standard requires significant coverage in independent, reliable sources, and most $5M to $100M companies do not have it yet. What we do instead is build toward it: Wikidata items are available to any real organization and give the engines a stable identifier, and the earned-media work accumulates the kind of coverage that could support an article later. If you already have the coverage, we will prepare a draft that follows the guidelines and disclose any conflict of interest exactly as the rules require. We do not write promotional Wikipedia articles, and we do not pay editors.

Does directory and schema work still matter if schema is not a ranking factor?

Schema is contested as a citation driver, and we are honest about that. Ahrefs' difference-in-differences test on 1,885 pages found FAQ and HowTo markup made no measurable difference on AI Mode or ChatGPT and slightly hurt on AI Overviews, while Microsoft has said Copilot does use structured data for grounding. We treat schema as hygiene that must be correct, especially the Organization and sameAs chain, and as a real lever for Bing and Copilot specifically, and we do not sell it as the thing that will get you cited. Directories matter for a different reason: consistent NAP data and profile corroboration help the engine resolve you as one entity, and Bing's index, which feeds Copilot and part of ChatGPT's retrieval, leans on them more than Google does.

What will the report show?

Each quarter you get the fact-check log (what each engine says about you now against what it said at baseline), a mention log with the source, the claim it corroborates and whether it has shown up as a citation yet, and the visibility rate for the prompt set by engine. We also show the misses, including pitches that went nowhere, because an honest log is the only way to steer the next quarter. .

Frequently asked questions

Is this link building under a new name?

No. Backlinks correlate weakly with AI citation (0.218 in Ahrefs' 75,000-brand study) while unlinked mentions correlate at 0.664. We pursue mentions on the sources the engines cite for your category, linked or not, and we do not buy placements.

Can you get us a Wikipedia page?

Only if you meet Wikipedia's notability standard, which most mid-sized companies do not yet. We always create a Wikidata item, and the earned-media work builds toward the coverage an article would need. Any draft we prepare discloses our conflict of interest as the rules require.

Which directories matter?

The ones that show up in the citation reads for your category and market, plus the identifier-grade profiles every entity needs: Google Business Profile, Bing Places, LinkedIn, and the industry or regional directories the engines cite. Generic directory blasts are not part of the program.

How long before the engines change what they say about us?

Fact-check corrections on your own site can show within weeks of indexing. Entity and mention effects build over quarters, which is why the program reports quarterly and runs on a six-month initial term.

Do you handle Reddit and review sites?

Yes, in your own name and within each platform's rules. That means answering real questions where you are welcome and asking real customers for honest reviews, not astroturfing.

Does this replace the content program?

No. The content program gives the engines something worth citing on your site, and this program gives them reason to trust it. Most clients run both; some start with one based on where the audit shows the bigger gap.
