How long does AEO take to show results?

AEO shows its first results in weeks and its real results in months: a correction to something the engines get wrong about your company can change the answer within weeks of the corrected page being indexed, being named for a competitive buyer prompt usually takes two to four months of pages, entity work and re-runs, and six months is the horizon at which you can tell a trend from noise, because the engines re-read the web on their own schedules and their answers move between runs even when nothing on your side has changed. Anyone promising a position in ChatGPT in 30 days is selling a tool export, and anyone saying a year is padding.

This page gives the timeline by type of change, explains what controls the pace, and shows how to tell progress from variance. It is the question we are asked most often on a first call, and the honest answer is more useful than a short one.

Which changes show first?

Factual corrections move fastest. When the fact-check prompts in an audit show an engine stating the wrong price range, the wrong service area or a discontinued service, a plain correction page on your own site plus reconciled profiles typically changes the answer within weeks of indexing, because the engine with retrieval on is reading your page fresh each time and has no reason to prefer the stale version once the new one exists. Being named for a competitive prompt is slower, because it depends on the engine finding proof of each decision factor on your pages, on the third-party record agreeing with you, and on the hidden searches behind the prompt returning your pages rather than someone else's, and each of those builds at its own pace.

Why can't it be faster?

Three clocks run in sequence and you control only the first. The first is publishing, which is as fast as your team. The second is crawling and indexing: Google's recrawl page says crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks after you request it, and that requesting a recrawl multiple times for the same URL will not get it crawled any faster. The engines that rely on their own crawlers, including OpenAI's and Perplexity's, publish no schedule at all, and our verification runs are set two to three weeks after a batch is indexed for that reason. The third clock is re-reading, since an engine that has already formed a view of your category from the pages it retrieved last month will keep retrieving them until your page outranks them for the hidden searches behind the question.

Freshness helps on some engines and not others. Half of Perplexity's citations are to content under 13 weeks old, and for freshness-sensitive queries 76% of ChatGPT's top-cited pages are under 30 days old, so a new page on a time-sensitive topic can be cited quickly there. At the same time 29% of ChatGPT's citations are to pages from 2022 or earlier, which means for an evergreen buyer question an established page with a strong record will keep its place for a while after yours goes live.

The first thing that changes is that the engine stops being wrong about you. The second is that it starts mentioning you for the narrow questions you now answer better than anyone. The third, months later, is that it names you when someone asks who to hire. Clients who expect the third in the first month give up before the second.

How do you tell progress from noise?

By running every prompt more than once and reporting a rate rather than a snapshot. AI answers vary by phrasing, session and day, and the variance is large: Semrush's August 2026 study of Reddit citations recorded Reddit holding a steady 3.8% share of ChatGPT citations from July 18 to August 7 and then falling to 0.5% a week later, with its share in AI Overviews and AI Mode down 11% and 31% over the same period, none of which had anything to do with what Reddit published. A single run that shows your company named proves nothing, and a single run that does not is not a failure. The measure we report is the share of runs in which you are named, by engine and by prompt cluster, and the trend in that share across months.

Can anything shorten the timeline?

A few things, and they are all about removing delays rather than adding tricks. Fixing crawler access first, since a site that blocks GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot through a CDN setting is invisible no matter how good the pages are, and Shepard's synthesis scores that accessibility factor highest of all at 9.5 out of 10. Publishing correction pages before competitive pages, because they move fastest and clear the engine's wrong beliefs out of the way. Writing briefs from the pages the engines already cite rather than from a keyword tool, so that the first version of a page is already shaped like the ones being quoted. And starting the entity and mention work in month one rather than after the content, because it has the longest clock.

When should you expect to see it in the business?

Later than you see it in the prompts, and in lead quality before lead volume. Glenn Gabe's panel of sites still shows AI search sending under 1% of visits to most of them, so the traffic graph will not tell you much, while Semrush's AI search traffic study logs a 4.4 times higher conversion rate for AI-search visitors than for classic organic traffic, so the leads that do arrive are worth watching individually. The measure to put in front of an owner at month six is which companies the engines now name for the buyer's questions and how that compares with month zero, and the traffic page explains what to track in place of sessions. If you want to know where you stand before the clock starts, that is what the audit is for.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly can a wrong AI answer about my company be fixed?

Usually within weeks of the corrected page being indexed, provided your profiles agree with the correction. Google says crawling can take a few days to a few weeks after a recrawl request, and the other engines publish no schedule.

How long until ChatGPT names us for a competitive prompt?

Two to four months is typical once the pages prove the decision factors and the third-party record corroborates them. It depends on how strong the currently cited pages are and whether the engine recognizes you as an entity.

Why do the answers change between runs?

Because the engines vary by phrasing, session and day, and their source mix shifts on its own. Semrush recorded Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations dropping from 3.8% to 0.5% within a week in August 2026. Report a rate across repeated runs, not a snapshot.

Why a six-month term?

Because the publish, index and re-run loop takes roughly that long to show a trend rather than noise. After six months our programs run month to month.

Start the clock with a baseline

Three weeks to find out what the engines say today, so month six has something to compare against.
