Do third-party mentions matter more than backlinks for AI search?

Last updated October 14, 2026. Written by the Third Coast AI team.

Yes, on every study we have read: an unlinked mention of your company on another website predicts whether ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot will cite you about three times as well as a backlink does, because the engines are reading what the web says about you rather than counting votes for your pages, and a mention on a site the engine already trusts is a sentence it can quote while a link is only a pointer. Backlinks still carry the Google ranking that feeds retrieval, so they are not worthless, but if you have one hour a week for off-site work, it belongs on mentions.

This page sets out what the measurements say, why the engines behave this way, how the two signals differ in practice, and where a mid-sized company should go to earn the mentions that count. It is the reasoning behind our citation and entity program, written for someone who wants to check the evidence before paying for the work.

Which studies measured the difference?

The cleanest one is Ahrefs' 75,000-brand study from May 2025, which correlated a long list of signals with how visible each brand was in Google AI Overviews. Branded web mentions came out at 0.664, the strongest signal in the set, while the number of backlinks came out at 0.218, domain rating at 0.326 and the number of referring domains at 0.295. Branded anchor text sat in between at 0.527, which is interesting because an anchor is a mention and a link at the same time, and branded search volume reached 0.392. The study also found that brands in the top quarter for mentions earned more than ten times the AI Overview citations of the next quarter, so the relationship is not a gentle slope but a cliff.

The 5W AI Platform Citation Source Index looked at the question from the other direction and attributed about 85% of 680 million AI citations to earned media, meaning coverage someone else published about a company rather than the company's own pages or paid placements. Cyrus Shepard's May 2026 synthesis of 54 studies scores brand and entity trust at 6.8 out of 10 and domain authority at 5.0, which is the same ordering from a third method. And Semrush's 2026 AI Visibility Index, built on 126 million prompts, found ChatGPT citing an average of 15 sources per response against 3 for Gemini, with customer reviews, community discussions, independent publishers and industry sources all appearing in the mix the engines draw from.

SignalCorrelation with AI Overview visibility (Ahrefs, 75,000 brands)Our reading
Branded web mentions0.664The strongest signal measured; mentions on trusted sites are text the engine can quote
Branded anchor text0.527A mention and a link at once, which is why it beats plain links
Branded search volume0.392People searching your name is a sign the engine's training data also knows you
Domain rating0.326Site authority still helps retrieval, but it is not the deciding factor
Referring domains0.295Links from many sites matter more than many links from one
Number of backlinks0.218The weakest of the set, and the one most agencies still sell first

Why would an engine care about a mention it cannot follow?

Because the engine does not need to follow it. A backlink was valuable to classic Google because it was a vote, and the algorithm counted votes. A language model with retrieval does something different: it runs the hidden searches the engine issues behind one question, reads the pages that come back, and writes a recommendation from what those pages say. If a trade publication writes that your firm is one of three in the state with a particular accreditation, that sentence can be retrieved, weighed against what your own site claims, and quoted in the answer, whether or not the publication linked to you. A link with no sentence around it gives the model nothing to say.

There is a second mechanism in the training data. Models learn which companies exist and what they are known for from the text they were trained on, and a company mentioned in many places with consistent facts becomes an entity the model recognizes before any search runs. Our entity page covers that side, and the two reinforce each other: the mention gets you recognized, and being recognized makes the next mention more likely to be attributed to you rather than to a similarly named company.

We used to tell clients a link was worth more than a mention, and for Google rankings that was true. For the engines it is the other way round, because a mention is a sentence a machine can quote and a link is only a pointer to one.

Should you stop building links altogether?

No, and the reason is that search rank still feeds the engines. Shepard's synthesis scores search rank at 9.4 out of 10, second only to crawler accessibility at 9.5, and Google's AI features are fed by the ordinary Google index, so a page that cannot rank at all is less likely to be retrieved. Links earned the normal way, by publishing something people cite, continue to help with that. What changes is the order of work and the budget split. Link building bought as a service, with the sentence around the link an afterthought, is the part we would cut, because it produces the signal with the 0.218 correlation and skips the one with 0.664.

The honest caveat is that all of these are correlations. Ahrefs itself says a brand with many mentions is also likely to have better content, more press and more search demand, and nobody has run a controlled test that adds mentions to one group of companies and withholds them from another. We treat the direction as settled and the size as approximate.

Where do the mentions that count come from?

Can a mention hurt you?

It can, in two ways. A mention that contradicts your own site, such as an old address, a discontinued service or a founder's name spelled three ways, splits the entity and makes the engine less confident about all of you, which is why profile reconciliation comes before outreach in our program. And a paid placement dressed up as coverage, or a review you wrote yourself, is the kind of thing the engines' fact-check behavior eventually surfaces, and the platforms' own rules forbid it. The work is slower when it is done honestly, and it also lasts.

Which first step is worth taking this month?

Run five of your buyers' questions in ChatGPT with search on and in Google AI Mode, open every page the answers cite, and write down which of those pages mention a competitor and not you. That list is your target list, and it will be shorter and more specific than any directory submission service. If you want it done across 60 to 120 prompts with the hidden searches captured, that is the audit, and the step-by-step guide shows the rest of the method.

Frequently asked questions

Do backlinks still matter for AI search?

Yes, as a foundation. Backlinks correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.218 in Ahrefs' 75,000-brand study, well below mentions at 0.664, but they still support the Google ranking that feeds retrieval. Earn them by publishing things worth citing rather than buying them.

What counts as a third-party mention?

Any sentence about your company on a site you do not control: a news article, a trade-association page, a review, a forum reply, a podcast transcript, a directory entry. Linked or unlinked both count, and the value depends on whether the engines cite that site for your category.

How many mentions do we need?

There is no published threshold. Ahrefs found the top quarter of brands by mentions earned more than ten times the citations of the next quarter, which suggests the effect compounds. We aim at the specific sources the engines already cite for the client's prompts rather than at a count.

Does a mention on a big site beat one on a small local site?

Not necessarily. For a regional prompt the engines cite local news, chambers and business journals, and a mention there is retrieved where a national mention may not be. The audit's citation reads tell you which sites matter for your category.

The audit lists every page the engines cited for your buyers' questions, and which of them mention you.
