AEO and AI search visibility in Detroit

Third Coast AI provides AEO and GEO services for companies in Detroit and Southeast Michigan: we find out which businesses ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot name when a metro Detroit buyer asks for a recommendation in your category, why those businesses and not you, and then we supply the pages and the third-party record that change the answer. We are based in Holland on the other side of the state, so the work is delivered remotely with an in-person kickoff or readout in Detroit or the suburbs whenever a client wants one.
Detroit is the one Michigan market where the engines have plenty to read, and that changes the problem. Wikipedia's Detroit entry puts the 2020 Census count at 639,111 in the city and 4,400,578 in the metro, the 14th largest in the country, with General Motors, Ford and Stellantis headquartered in the region and about 16 million visitors a year. For almost any category there are several credible companies and a deep press and directory record behind them, so the engine is choosing among options rather than struggling to fill a list, and our job is to find out how that choice is made for your category.
Which Detroit categories see the most competition inside AI answers?
The ones with a deep supplier bench and a buyer who shops by shortlist. Automotive and industrial suppliers are the obvious case, because a procurement engineer in Auburn Hills or in another state asks ChatGPT for "tier-two stamping suppliers in Southeast Michigan with IATF certification" and gets five names, and the five names are drawn from Thomasnet, which maintains profiles of more than 500,000 North American suppliers, from the companies' own capability pages, and from trade press. Healthcare is the second, with Henry Ford Health describing itself as headquartered in Detroit for more than a century with 50,000 team members and more than 550 sites, the Detroit Medical Center, and a large independent practice base, so a patient's question about a specialist gets a crowded answer. Professional services, commercial real estate, construction, restaurants and events round out the list.
The volume is also simply larger. Pew Research measured click-through on Google results pages at 8% when an AI summary was present against 15% without one (July 2025), and Semrush measured a 71% rise on commercial searches between November 2025 and April 2026, with finance queries growing fastest at 231.25%. In a metro of 4.4 million, a modest share of buyer questions moving into written answers is a very large number of conversations a Detroit company is either in or out of.

Does a Detroit prompt split across the suburbs?
More than any other prompt in Michigan. Google's AI features documentation says AI Overviews and AI Mode may issue multiple related searches on subtopics and data sources to build a response, and our captures show one question becoming 10 to 20 hidden searches. For Detroit prompts those hidden searches spread across Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties, through Troy, Southfield, Royal Oak, Birmingham, Dearborn, Warren, Sterling Heights, Novi, Auburn Hills and Ann Arbor, and a buyer who typed "Detroit" frequently gets an answer full of companies in the suburbs because the suburbs are where the specific pages are. A company that serves the whole region and says so in a short, specific section for each area matches far more of those searches than one that says "serving Southeast Michigan."
The source pool is the deepest in the state: Crain's Detroit Business, the Detroit Free Press and the Detroit News, the local TV stations, the Detroit Regional Chamber, which describes itself as the voice of business for the 11-county Southeast Michigan region, Visit Detroit for the hospitality categories across Wayne, Oakland and Macomb, Wayne State and the health systems for anything academic or clinical, the trade and bar associations, and a large body of review profiles. Depth helps the engine and does not help a company that is absent from it, and the citation and entity program is built to work that list honestly.
85.5% of AI citations came from earned, third-party media rather than brand-owned content in the 5W citation index. In a market as well documented as Detroit, that record is what the engines read first, and your own pages are what they read to confirm it.
Who gets named in Detroit today, and why?
When we run visibility prompts for a Detroit category, the engine typically names one or two companies with the strongest third-party record, meaning press mentions, hundreds of recent reviews, a Wikipedia or Wikidata presence and consistent profiles, one or two whose own pages answer the hidden searches well, and a national firm or a directory as filler. The company with the best Google ranking shows up perhaps half the time, which matches the Ahrefs finding that overlap between Google's top ten and AI Overview citations fell to 38% by March 2026, and Tom Capper at Moz measured 88% of AI Mode citations as pages that did not appear in the organic results for the same query.
The decision factors for Detroit categories are specific and often industrial: certifications, customer programs, capacity, bonding, hospital affiliation, named professionals, fee structure, service radius, and whether the company handles the buyer's exact situation. Most company sites state two or three of them in passing. Aggarwal and colleagues at Princeton (KDD 2024) measured what stating them plainly does for citation, with statistics lifting visibility in generated answers by about 33%, cited sources by about 28% and quotations by about 41%, and the decision factors page explains how we extract the list for a category.
Detroit is the one place in Michigan where the engines are not guessing. They have Crain's, the chamber, Thomasnet and a thousand reviews to read, and they pick the company whose own pages agree with all of it in specific sentences.

Can a West Michigan firm serve Detroit well?
We think so, with two honest caveats. The method is the same one we run for companies nationally, and most of the engagement is desk work: prompt bank, retrieval-on mining, proof audit, citation reads, briefs, entity work and verification, tracked in PromptWatch and Profound alongside our own prompt miner. The caveats are that we are three hours away, so intake and working sessions run over video and the readout is an in-person trip we schedule rather than a walk across town, and that the Detroit source list is deep enough that reading it well takes more hours than a lakeshore list does, which the audit scope reflects. A Detroit agency can run the same tools, and the guide to choosing an AEO agency lists the questions to ask any of us.
- Prompt bank. 60 to 120 prompts written the way metro Detroit buyers ask, with Oakland, Macomb and Wayne County and named-suburb variants, across visibility, decision-factor, competitor and fact-check prompt types.
- Mining with retrieval on. Each prompt run more than once across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot, with the hidden searches and citations captured.
- Proof audit and citation reads. Your pages checked against the factors, and the Detroit sources the engines already cite read for structure and sources.
- Briefs, publish gate and pages. Content written to the hidden searches and the factors, checked before it goes live, with corrections for anything the engines currently get wrong about you.
- Entity and mention work. Thomasnet, chamber, association and review profiles reconciled, a Wikidata item created, and the regional source list worked honestly, with no paid placements.
- Verification. The prompt set re-run after indexing and monthly after that, reported at the prompt level with the misses included, and the readout in Detroit or over video.
The audit takes about three weeks, the ongoing work runs through the GEO content program and the citation and entity program, and fees are quoted after a short scoping call. For suppliers specifically, the manufacturers page goes through the Thomasnet and certification side in detail.
Frequently asked questions
No. We are based in Holland, about three hours west. Intake and working sessions run over video and we travel to Detroit or the suburbs for the kickoff or readout when a client wants it in person.
For local prompts, typically Crain's Detroit Business, the Free Press and the News, the local TV stations, the Detroit Regional Chamber, Visit Detroit for hospitality, Thomasnet for suppliers, the bar and trade associations, Google and Yelp profiles, and company sites. The audit's citation reads give the exact list for your category.
Yes, in the B2B prompts procurement staff run in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity rather than in Google AI Overviews, which rarely trigger on queries that specific. The answers draw on Thomasnet, trade press and capability pages, and a supplier absent from those is absent from the shortlist.
About three weeks, the same as anywhere, with a slightly larger citation-read scope because the Detroit source list is deeper than most.
