AEO services for Michigan companies, from Detroit to the lakeshore
Last updated October 14, 2026. Written by the Third Coast AI team.
Third Coast AI provides answer engine optimization for companies anywhere in Michigan: we find out which businesses ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot name when a buyer in Detroit, Lansing, Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids or a smaller town asks for a recommendation in your category, we work out why those companies and not you, and then we supply the pages and the third-party record that change the answer. We are based in Holland on the lakeshore, we meet West Michigan clients in person, and we deliver the same method remotely for the rest of the state, with an in-person kickoff or readout in Detroit, Lansing or Ann Arbor when a client wants one.
This page covers how a Michigan buyer's question differs from a national one, which sources the engines reach for when a prompt names a Michigan city, and how the engagement runs when the client is three hours from us rather than thirty minutes. The city pages for Grand Rapids, Holland, Detroit, Lansing and Traverse City go deeper on each market.
Which Michigan markets do we serve, and how do we work in each?
Michigan is a big state with one dominant metro and several mid-sized ones, and the way a buyer asks an engine for help is shaped by where they sit. Wikipedia's Michigan entry puts the 2025 population at 10,127,884, with Detroit the most populous city and Lansing the capital, and the three large automakers headquartered in Metro Detroit, which means the B2B prompts we see for Michigan suppliers very often carry an automotive or industrial flavor even when the company itself is in furniture, food or medical devices. The table below is how we think about the state from Holland.
| Market | A prompt a buyer there might run | How we work with clients there |
|---|---|---|
| Detroit and Southeast Michigan | "Tier-two automotive suppliers near Detroit with IATF certification" | Remote delivery, with an in-person kickoff or readout on request (about three hours each way) |
| Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County | "Which Ann Arbor firms do software patent work for startups?" | Remote delivery, in-person readout on request |
| Lansing and East Lansing | "Government relations firms in Lansing that handle licensing issues" | Remote delivery, in-person readout on request (under two hours) |
| Grand Rapids and Kent County | "Best commercial interior contractors in Grand Rapids" | In person; we are 30 minutes away |
| Holland, Grand Haven, Muskegon and the lakeshore | "Reliable HVAC company in Holland Michigan" | In person; this is home |
| Kalamazoo and Southwest Michigan | "Contract packaging near Kalamazoo with FDA registration" | In person for intake and readout, about an hour away |
| Traverse City and Northern Michigan | "Where should we stay in Traverse City for the Cherry Festival?" | Remote delivery with a seasonal in-person visit |
The method does not change by distance. We build a prompt bank the way buyers in that market ask, run it with retrieval on across the engines, capture the hidden searches the engine runs behind one question and the decision factors it uses, audit your pages for proof of each factor, read the pages the engines already cite, write briefs modeled on them, and re-run to verify. What changes with distance is how much of the conversation happens over video and how we handle the local reading, which we cover below.
Does a question about a Michigan city behave differently from a national one?
It does, in two ways we can measure. The first is the set of hidden sub-queries. When a buyer asks "best employment lawyer in Lansing for a non-compete," the engine does not search for that phrase once; Google's AI features documentation says AI Overviews and AI Mode may issue multiple related searches on subtopics and data sources to build a response, and our own captures show one question splitting into 10 to 20 hidden searches, several of which carry the city name or a neighboring town. A page that says "we serve clients throughout Michigan" matches almost none of them, while a page that says what the firm does for Ingham County employers in plain sentences matches several.
The second difference is the pool of sources. A national prompt draws on Wikipedia, Reddit, YouTube and the big publishers, and the 5W citation index put Wikipedia at 13.15% and Reddit at 11.97% of US ChatGPT citations, with YouTube showing up in 23% of AI Overview answers. A Michigan city prompt draws on a much shorter list: Google Business Profiles and the reviews on them, Yelp, the regional business press (Crain's Detroit Business, the Grand Rapids Business Journal, MiBiz, MLive and the local TV stations), chamber directories, the convention and visitors bureau, the relevant trade or bar association, the university or hospital system if the category touches them, and the companies' own pages. The engines are also wrong more often on local facts, naming closed businesses, old addresses and companies outside the service area, which is why the fact-check prompts in our audit exist.
Is AI search already a factor for Michigan companies, or is this early?
It depends on the category, and the honest way to answer is to run your prompts rather than quote a national average. The averages are still worth knowing. Pew Research measured click-through on Google results pages at 8% when an AI summary was present against 15% without one (July 2025), BrightEdge's tracking now puts AI Overviews on nearly half of Google queries, and Semrush measured a 71% rise on commercial searches between November 2025 and April 2026, with finance queries growing fastest at 231.25% over the same six months. For a Michigan company whose buyers are consumers or small businesses, most of the Google searches that lead to a purchase now open with a written answer.
For the industrial half of the state the shift shows up differently. The Michigan Manufacturers Association reports manufacturing output of $96.22 billion in 2017, 19.2% of state GDP and more than 635,700 people directly employed, and the buyers for those companies are procurement managers and engineers in other states who ask ChatGPT for a supplier shortlist before they ever visit a website. Those prompts rarely trigger an AI Overview on Google, because the queries are too specific, and they almost always get a full written answer in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. The manufacturers page goes through that in detail.
38% of AI Overview citations came from Google's organic top ten by March 2026, down from 76% eight months earlier, in Ahrefs' measurement. Ranking well in Michigan and being named by the engines are two different things to check, and the audit checks both.
Can we list the sources the engines cite for Michigan prompts?
The list varies by category and by city, and the citation reads in the audit give you the exact list for yours. Across the Michigan prompt banks we have run, the sources that come up most often fall into a handful of groups:
- Google Business Profiles and their reviews. Google's local ranking help page says local results are ranked on relevance, distance and prominence, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help a business's local ranking; the AI features are built on the same index, so a thin or inconsistent profile hurts twice.
- Review platforms for the category. Yelp for consumer services, Avvo for lawyers, Healthgrades for physicians, Angi and the Better Business Bureau for home services, and G2 or Clutch for software and agencies.
- Regional business press. Crain's Detroit Business in the southeast, the Grand Rapids Business Journal and MiBiz in the west, MLive statewide, the Lansing State Journal and the Traverse City Record-Eagle in their markets.
- Chambers, visitors bureaus and economic development groups. The Detroit Regional Chamber describes itself as the voice of business for the 11-county Southeast Michigan region, the Lansing Regional Chamber lists 1,000+ members in its directory, and Traverse Connect is the lead economic development organization for the Grand Traverse region; their member pages are cited for local shortlists more often than most owners expect.
- Trade and professional associations. The State Bar of Michigan directory, the Michigan Manufacturers Association, and the national associations for each trade.
- Universities and health systems when the category touches them, such as Michigan State University pages for Lansing or Henry Ford Health pages for Detroit.
Ahrefs' 75,000-brand study found brand web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664 against 0.218 for backlinks, which is why the citation and entity program spends its time on the sources above rather than on link building. The reviews and reputation page covers the review platforms specifically.
Michigan companies tend to be well known in their own town and invisible to a machine. The work is mostly writing down what everyone in the county already knows, on pages and profiles the engines read, in sentences specific enough to quote.

Will the engagement run remotely for a Detroit or Ann Arbor company?
Yes, and most of it does for every client regardless of distance, because the mining, the proof audit, the citation reads and the verification runs are desk work. What we do in person in West Michigan is the intake conversation, the readout, and the occasional working session with the people who know the product. For clients in Detroit, Ann Arbor, Lansing or Traverse City we run those over video by default and will drive over for the readout when the client wants the room, which several do.
- Intake. A conversation with the owner or marketing lead about who buys, how they describe the problem, and which categories matter, over video or in person.
- Prompt bank. 60 to 120 prompts written the way buyers in your market ask, including the city and nearby-town variants, across visibility, decision-factor, competitor and fact-check prompt types.
- Mining with retrieval on. Every prompt run more than once across the engines, with the hidden searches and the citations captured.
- Proof audit and citation reads. Your pages checked against the decision factors, and the cited pages for your category read for structure and sources.
- Briefs and the publish gate. Written briefs modeled on what gets cited, with every page checked before it goes live, including corrections for anything the engines get wrong about you.
- Entity and mention work. Profiles reconciled, a Wikidata item created, and the local source list worked honestly.
- Verification. The prompt set re-run after indexing and monthly after that, tracked in PromptWatch and Profound alongside our own prompt miner, and reported at the prompt level with the misses included.
Should a Michigan company hire a Michigan firm for this?
Not necessarily, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. A good national firm can run the same method. Where being in the state helps is in reading the hidden searches: knowing that a Grand Rapids prompt pulls in Ada and Cascade, that a Lansing prompt pulls in East Lansing and Okemos, that a Detroit prompt about a supplier often means Auburn Hills or Warren, and knowing which of the cited regional sources carries weight for a given category because we read them anyway. The guide to choosing an AEO agency lists the questions to ask any vendor, including us, and the pricing guide explains how the audit and the programs are priced; our own fees are quoted after a short scoping call.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. We deliver the audit and both programs remotely for companies across Michigan and the US. In-person intake and readouts are standard on the lakeshore and in Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo, and available on request in Detroit, Ann Arbor, Lansing and Traverse City.
For local prompts the list is usually Google Business Profiles and reviews, the category's review platform (Avvo, Healthgrades, Angi, Yelp), the regional business press, chamber and visitors bureau directories, and the relevant association. The audit's citation reads give the exact list for your category and city.
The mechanics are the same, but the hidden searches and cited sources differ. Detroit prompts split across more suburbs and draw on a deeper press and directory record; Grand Rapids and lakeshore prompts draw on a shorter list, which makes a handful of accurate mentions count for more.
About three weeks, the same as anywhere. The distance only changes whether the intake and readout happen over video or in your office.
The audit is a fixed fee and the programs are monthly retainers, quoted after a short scoping call. The pricing guide explains what drives the number.
