AEO and AI search visibility in Lansing

Last updated October 14, 2026. Written by the Third Coast AI team.

Third Coast AI provides AEO and GEO services for companies in Lansing, East Lansing and the capital region: we find out which businesses ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot name when a Lansing buyer asks for a recommendation in your category, why those businesses and not you, and then we supply the pages and the third-party record that change the answer. We are based in Holland, under two hours west, so the work is delivered remotely with an in-person kickoff or readout whenever a client wants one.

Lansing is an unusual market because its largest buyers are institutions. Wikipedia's Lansing entry puts the 2020 Census count at 112,644 in the city and 473,203 in the metro, and lists the State of Michigan (14,390 employees), Michigan State University (10,253), University of Michigan Health-Sparrow (7,600), General Motors (4,549) and Lansing Community College (3,144) as the largest employers. A company selling into those institutions is asked about by procurement staff, and a company selling to the people who work there is asked about by a well-paid, well-educated resident base, and the two kinds of prompt pull from different sources.

Which Lansing buyers are asking the engines, and what do they ask?

Three groups, in our experience. The first is the government and association world around the Capitol: law firms, lobbying and government relations shops, associations, consultants and IT vendors who sell to the state or to the people who deal with it, and whose buyers ask questions like "which Lansing firms handle licensing appeals before LARA" or "government relations firms in Lansing for a healthcare association." The second is the university economy in East Lansing, where students, parents and faculty ask about apartments, dentists, moving companies and restaurants near campus. The third is the ordinary mid-sized-city economy of trades, healthcare, auto suppliers and professional services, whose buyers ask the practical, repeat questions.

All three groups have moved into AI answers at roughly the national pace. Pew Research measured click-through on Google results pages at 8% when an AI summary was present against 15% without one (July 2025), and Semrush measured a 71% rise on commercial searches between November 2025 and April 2026, with jobs and education prompts among the most likely to trigger one, which matters in a town organized around a university and a state government.

Does a Lansing prompt split across the suburbs the way a Grand Rapids prompt does?

Yes, and more so in some categories because the metro is spread across three counties. Google's AI features documentation says AI Overviews and AI Mode may issue multiple related searches on subtopics and data sources to build a response, and our captures show one question becoming 10 to 20 hidden searches. For Lansing prompts the hidden searches reach to East Lansing, Okemos, Haslett, Holt, Mason, DeWitt, Grand Ledge and Delta Township, and for anything near the Capitol they ask about parking and walking distance. A plumber whose page says "serving the greater Lansing area" matches none of them; a page with a short, specific section for each township matches several.

The cited sources for Lansing prompts are a moderate list: the Lansing State Journal and WLNS and WILX, MLive's Lansing coverage, the Lansing Regional Chamber, which lists 1,000+ members in its directory, Michigan State University and the City pages for civic and campus topics, Google and Yelp profiles, the State Bar of Michigan directory for lawyers, and the companies' own pages. The engines are also frequently wrong about local facts, especially for businesses near campus that turn over quickly, and the fact-check prompts in the audit exist to catch those.

0.664 is the correlation Ahrefs' 75,000-brand study found between brand web mentions and AI Overview visibility, against 0.218 for backlinks. For a Lansing firm that means the chamber directory, the State Journal and the association pages matter more than another link.

Who gets named in Lansing today, and why?

For the institutional categories the engines name the firms with the deepest public record: named professionals with their own profiles, issue areas written out on the site, mentions in the State Journal and in association newsletters, and consistent directory entries. Firms that describe themselves as "full service" lose to firms that say which three things they do. For the consumer categories the engine names one or two companies with strong review profiles, then fills the list with a national chain or a directory page, and the first company to state the decision factors plainly tends to get picked.

Those factors come straight from the engines when we run decision-factor prompts: years in business, licensing and insurance, service radius, response time, pricing, certifications, recent reviews, and whether the company handles the buyer's exact situation. Aggarwal and colleagues at Princeton (KDD 2024) measured what stating them does for citation, with statistics lifting visibility in generated answers by about 33%, cited sources by about 28% and quotations by about 41%. The law firms page covers the compliance side of writing those pages for a Lansing practice.

Lansing firms are used to being found through relationships, which still works for the Capitol crowd and does nothing for the engine. The engine reads the State Journal, the chamber directory and your own pages, and most firms have given it very little to read.

Third Coast AI

Can the engagement run remotely, and what happens in person?

Most of it runs remotely for every client, because the mining, the proof audit, the citation reads, the briefs and the verification runs are desk work. For Lansing clients we run the intake and the working sessions over video and drive over for the readout when the client wants it, which is an easy morning from Holland. The method is the same one we run for companies nationally and for our neighbors on the lakeshore.

  1. Prompt bank. 60 to 120 prompts written the way Lansing buyers ask, with East Lansing, Okemos, Holt, Mason, DeWitt and Delta Township variants, across visibility, decision-factor, competitor and fact-check prompt types.
  2. Mining with retrieval on. Each prompt run more than once across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot, with the hidden searches and citations captured.
  3. Decision factors and proof audit. The criteria the engines use for your category, checked page by page against your site.
  4. Citation reads. The Lansing sources the engines trust, which competitors they mention, and the structure of the pages that get cited.
  5. Briefs, publish gate and pages. Content written to the hidden searches and the factors, checked before it goes live, with corrections for anything the engines currently get wrong about you.
  6. Entity and mention work. Profiles reconciled, a Wikidata item created, and the local source list worked honestly, with no paid placements.
  7. Verification. The prompt set re-run after indexing and monthly after that, reported at the prompt level with the misses included.

The ongoing work runs through the GEO content program and the citation and entity program, both on six-month initial terms, and fees are quoted after a short scoping call. The Michigan page explains how we cover the rest of the state, and the audit checklist is a reasonable way to check your own site before you call anyone.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have an office in Lansing?

No. We are based in Holland, under two hours west. Intake and working sessions run over video and we travel to Lansing for the readout when a client wants it in person.

Which Lansing sources do the engines cite?

For local prompts, typically the Lansing State Journal and the local TV stations, MLive, the Lansing Regional Chamber directory, MSU and City pages for campus and civic topics, the State Bar of Michigan directory for lawyers, Google and Yelp profiles, and company sites. The audit's citation reads give the exact list for your category.

Does this work for a firm that sells to state government?

Yes, with a different prompt bank. Procurement and association staff ask the engines for vendor shortlists, and the decision factors they use (issue areas, named professionals, registered status, references) are the ones the pages have to supply.

How long does the audit take?

About three weeks, the same as anywhere. Distance only changes whether the readout happens over video or in your office.
