How much does Reddit shape AI answers, and should you post there?

Reddit is the single most-cited domain in ChatGPT at 16.8% of citations in Ahrefs' September 2026 count and a top source in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, which makes forum threads one of the largest pools of text the engines draw on when a buyer asks about a category, but its share swings hard between engines and months, from close to 60% of ChatGPT responses in August 2025 to under 1% for a stretch of August 2026, so a company should take part in the threads that already come up for its buyers' questions, in its own name and by its own staff, and should not build a plan around Reddit as a channel. Astroturfing is against the platforms' rules and is the kind of thing the engines' cross-checking eventually surfaces.

This page gives Reddit's measured share by engine, explains why it moves, and sets out how a mid-sized company can participate in forums in a way that produces retrievable, honest text. It is the community half of the off-site work in our citation and entity program.

How much of the engines' citations go to Reddit?

More than to any other single site in ChatGPT, and a large share in Google's AI features, with the exact figure depending on when you measure. Ahrefs' September 2026 list of the most-cited domains in ChatGPT puts Reddit first at 16.8% of citations, ahead of Wikipedia at 7.0%, Consumer Reports at 3.7% and Forbes at 3.1%. Ahrefs' June 2025 comparison of cited domains across 76.7 million AI Overviews, 957,000 ChatGPT prompts and 953,500 Perplexity prompts found Reddit at 7.4% and Quora at 3.6% of AI Overview citations while neither made the top ten in ChatGPT or Perplexity that month, which shows how far ChatGPT's mix moved in a year. Across the field, Reddit accounts for somewhere between 21% and 40% of AI Overview citations depending on the study and the query set, and Semrush's 2026 AI Visibility Index, built on 126 million prompts from January to April 2026, found both ChatGPT and Gemini relying heavily on Wikipedia and Reddit.

Why does the share move so much?

Because the engines change their source mix on their own schedule, and Reddit is the clearest example of it. Semrush's 13-week study of 230,000 prompts from July to October 2025 recorded Reddit cited in close to 60% of ChatGPT responses in early August before collapsing to around 10% by mid-September, with Wikipedia showing the same swing on ChatGPT only, while Google AI Mode held LinkedIn steady at about 15% and Perplexity's top five barely moved. Semrush's August 2026 study of Reddit citations then recorded a second drop a year later, from a steady 3.8% of ChatGPT citations to 0.5% within a week, with AI Overviews and AI Mode down 11% and 31% over the same period. Nothing Reddit published caused either move; the engines retuned. A plan that depends on one source's share is a plan that can lose a third of its value in a week without warning.

What does not move is the reason the engines read forums at all. A thread is a pile of first-person accounts from people with no commercial interest, which is the closest thing the web offers to the independent evidence the engines weight most, and the hidden searches behind a buyer's question routinely include one phrased the way a forum title would be. When the thread names your company, the engine has a third-party mention; when it names a competitor and not you, the engine has a reason to prefer the competitor.

We tell clients to go and read the threads before they post in one. The question that comes up for your category has usually been asked a dozen times, and the answer the engine is quoting is whichever reply was most specific. Your job is to be the next most specific reply, in your own name, and then to leave.

Should a company post on Reddit at all?

Yes, in a narrow way, and no as a campaign. The threads worth joining are the ones the engines already cite for your buyers' questions, which the citation reads in an audit list directly, plus the ones that come up when you search the subreddit for your category and your town. A reply from a named employee that answers the question with specifics, discloses the affiliation, and recommends a competitor when the competitor is the right answer is retrievable text that corroborates your decision factors and reads as what it is. A reply that pretends to be a customer, a burst of new accounts praising the company, or a thread started to ask a question you then answer is astroturfing, and it is both against the platforms' rules and the kind of pattern that a fact-check prompt or a moderator eventually exposes in public.

Which forums matter besides Reddit?

Quora, which took 3.6% of AI Overview citations in Ahrefs' June 2025 count and which Semrush found losing share on AI Mode later that year; LinkedIn, which Semrush's 13-week study found cited steadily at about 15% on Google AI Mode and which functions as a forum for B2B questions; Stack Exchange and the specialist technical forums for software and engineering categories; and the trade-specific communities, from contractor forums to practice-management groups, that the engines cite for narrow professional questions. For a regional business the relevant community is often a local subreddit or a neighborhood group, and the engines cite the subreddit and cannot read the group, which is worth knowing before you spend an hour on either.

How does this fit with the rest of the off-site work?

Forum participation is the smallest of the three off-site streams and the one most likely to go wrong, so we schedule it last. Profile reconciliation and Wikidata come first because nothing else counts until the engine knows who you are; earned mentions on the sites the engines cite come second because they carry the largest measured effect; and forum replies come third, in the threads the citation reads surfaced, by a named person, a few a month. The mentions page explains the first two, and the reviews page covers the other community source the engines read. If you want to know whether Reddit is already shaping what the engines say about your category, the audit's citation reads will show it in the first week.

Frequently asked questions

Is Reddit really the most-cited site in ChatGPT?

In Ahrefs' September 2026 count, yes, at 16.8% of citations, ahead of Wikipedia at 7.0%. The share moves: Semrush recorded it near 60% of ChatGPT responses in August 2025, around 10% a month later, and 0.5% for a stretch of August 2026.

Should we start a Reddit marketing campaign?

No. Reddit's share of citations can fall by a third in a week when an engine retunes, and promotional posting is against the platform's rules. Take part in the threads the engines already cite for your buyers' questions, in your own name, a few times a month.

What counts as astroturfing?

Posting as a customer when you are the company, running several accounts, voting on your own content, or seeding questions you then answer. Platforms ban it, moderators expose it publicly, and the engines' cross-checking can surface the pattern in an answer about you.

Which forums matter besides Reddit?

Quora, LinkedIn for B2B questions, Stack Exchange and specialist technical forums, and the trade or local communities the engines cite for narrow questions. The audit's citation reads show which ones appear for your category.

Can forum posts correct wrong AI answers about us?

Sometimes. A thread stating a wrong fact can be quoted by an engine, and a single polite, factual reply from a named employee puts the correction on the record. Pair it with a correction page on your own site.
