Do online reviews affect what AI engines say about your company?

Last updated October 14, 2026. Written by the Third Coast AI team.

Yes, and more directly than most companies realize: ChatGPT adds the word reviews to its own hidden searches even when the buyer did not ask about them, Yelp ranks seventh among all domains cited by AI engines in a 30-million-source analysis, G2 appears among Perplexity's top five sources, and the engines read review text as third-party evidence about the decision factors they are scoring, so a review profile with recent, specific, dated reviews on the platform the engine cites for your category is one of the few off-site assets you can improve on your own schedule. The same studies show review sites are a modest share of total citations, so reviews are a factor to keep current rather than a strategy on their own.

This page sets out what the citation-source studies show about review platforms by engine, how review text gets used in an answer, which platforms matter for which categories, and the review practices that help without crossing a platform's rules. It is the review half of our citation and entity program.

Which review platforms do the engines cite?

It depends on the engine and the category, and two 2026 studies give the shape. Peec's March 2026 analysis of 30 million sources cited by AI engines found Yelp ranked seventh among all cited domains, found Tripadvisor, Trustpilot, G2 and Clutch all in the top 100, found G2 in Perplexity's top five sources, and found that Trustpilot accounted for 54% of the review-category domains ChatGPT targets when it restricts a hidden search to a specific site. The same analysis found ChatGPT injecting the word reviews into its hidden searches even when the user never asked for reviews, which means a review profile is retrieved during a buyer's question whether or not the buyer thought to ask.

The B2B picture is narrower. Growfusely's July 2026 study ran 128 queries in 16 B2B software categories through ChatGPT and Perplexity and collected 1,739 citations, of which G2, Capterra, Gartner and every other review site combined made up 7.3%, with G2 the clear leader among them at 41 citations in 13 categories and Capterra and GetApp barely appearing. The authors' conclusion was that review platforms are table stakes rather than a strategy, and we agree with it for software. In consumer categories the independent testing sites matter more: in Ahrefs' September 2026 list of the most-cited domains in ChatGPT, Consumer Reports is third at 3.7% of citations, behind only Reddit and Wikipedia.

Why does the engine read reviews at all?

Because reviews are third-party evidence, and the engines weight third-party evidence over a company's own claims. Ahrefs' 75,000-brand study found mentions on other sites correlated with AI citations at 0.664 against 0.218 for backlinks, and the 5W citation index attributed about 85% of 680 million AI citations to earned media. A review is the most abundant form of that evidence, and it is specific in a way a press mention rarely is: a customer who writes that the crew showed up on the day promised and handled the county permit has just corroborated two decision factors, response time and permit handling, in words the engine can relay. When we run factor prompts for local categories, reviews with recency appear on the engines' own criteria lists next to licensing and years in business, which is the engine telling you it reads them.

The engine does not read your star rating. It reads what the reviews say, and it is looking for the same things it scores you on everywhere else: did you do what you said, on time, for the situation the buyer is in. A hundred reviews that say great service tell it less than ten that say what the service was.

Which review practices help, and which cross a line?

Should a B2B company bother?

Yes, within limits. The 7.3% share Growfusely measured for review sites in B2B software is small, and the same study found independent content plus the vendors' own pages made up nearly 79% of citations, which says the decision is won on your own pages and in independent coverage. But G2 sits in Perplexity's top five sources and the profile is cheap to maintain, and a Clutch or G2 page with current reviews is often the only third-party page that states your pricing model, team size and specialties in a structured way, which makes it a corroboration source for factors your site claims. Keep it current, keep it consistent, and spend the rest of the effort on the pages and the mentions.

How do reviews fit the rest of the record?

As one source the engine triangulates with the others. A buyer's question produces hidden searches for the company's own page, for third-party coverage and for reviews, and the engine's confidence in a recommendation rises when all three agree on the same facts. That is why review work sits inside the entity program rather than alongside it: the profile fields are reconciled with every other profile, the review responses are written to corroborate the decision factors the pages prove, and the quarterly fact-check re-read includes what the engines are now saying about your reputation. The entity page covers the reconciliation, and the decision-factors page covers how to find out which factors your reviews should be speaking to. Where to start is the audit, whose citation reads will show which review platform, if any, the engines are already citing for your category.

Frequently asked questions

Which review site matters most for AI search?

The one the engines cite for your category. Peec found Yelp seventh among all cited domains and G2 in Perplexity's top five; Google reviews feed Google's AI features through the normal index; Trustpilot dominates ChatGPT's site-restricted review searches. The audit's citation reads tell you which applies to you.

Does ChatGPT look at reviews if the user doesn't ask?

Yes. Peec's March 2026 analysis found ChatGPT adds the word reviews to its own hidden searches even when the user never asked for them, so your review profiles are retrieved during ordinary buyer questions.

How big a share of AI citations are review sites?

Modest. Growfusely measured G2, Capterra, Gartner and every other review site combined at 7.3% of citations in B2B software, with independent content and vendors' own pages at nearly 79%. Reviews corroborate; they do not carry the decision.

Can we respond to reviews in a way that helps?

Yes. Responses are retrievable text in your name, and a factual response can correct a wrong detail on the record or restate a decision factor. Keep them specific and never argue.

Are incentivized reviews a risk?

Yes. Every platform forbids them, and the engines' cross-checking surfaces the pattern. Ask every customer in the normal course of business and let the mix fall where it falls.
